Fatal Crane Accident Near Tampa
In April of 2024, a crane collapsed near Tampa – killing one worker and injuring three others. To make matters even more dangerous, the crane fell directly onto a vehicle down below – completely squashing it in the process. However, the deceased worker was not inside this vehicle, and he fell from a significant height while working at a construction site. The construction site has been shut down pending an investigation, and the cause of the collapse is unclear. This is certainly not the first time structures and cranes have fallen apart in Florida, and a worrying trend is clearly emerging.
Landscaper Clipped by Passing Vehicle in Port St. Lucie
Also in April of 2024, a landscaper suffered injuries after being struck by a passing vehicle in Port St. Lucie. The worker assumed she was safe, as she was working in a lane that had been completely closed off with construction pylons. But like so many other accidents of this nature, a negligent vehicle ignored the cones, ventured into the construction zone, and struck the worker. Images taken after the collision show a dark Mercedes sedan with a traffic pylon still wedged underneath the bumper. The workers’ injuries are reportedly non-life-threatening.
Sanitation Worker Killed by His Own Garbage Truck
During the first few weeks of April, a sanitation worker in Marion County also lost his life after an accident involving his own garbage truck. According to Fox 35, the tire of this vehicle came loose and struck the worker while he was unloading waste. The impact was enough to cause fatal injuries. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of this accident, and it’s not clear what caused the tire to come loose. However, statistics clearly show that sanitation workers face higher fatality risks than most other workers in the State.
Fuel Truck Crash Injures and Kills Migrant Workers in Fort Meade
Also that month, a truck carrying 38 migrant workers crashed into a fuel truck. The bus appears to have crossed the center line, causing a head-on collision with the fuel tanker. This crash killed one person and injured 10 others – including the truck driver. Authorities aren’t sure why the bus driver veered into oncoming traffic, but the accident could have been much worse if the fuel tanker had exploded.
