Dangers of Distracted Driving
It is common knowledge that driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs is a major road danger, but did you know that there is another form of impaired driving that studies are showing may be just as dangerous, if not more so? That form is called distracted driving and it accounted for more than 3,400 deaths and 391,000 injuries last year alone. What exactly is distracted driving and what can you do to prevent it?
Distracted driving is just as it sounds; it is the act of driving while also engaging in another activity that takes a driver’s focus away from the road. The typical example used is texting or talking on a cell phone, but it can also include eating, messing with the stereo, music device, or navigation system. Texting is the most commonly cited example for a good reason however because while a driver is looking at the phone, he or she is not looking at the road. This and all of the other examples create a dangerous environment of a driver not paying attention, which drastically increases the risk of an accident.
How can one avoid distracted driving? The answer is as simple as putting down the distraction, be it cell phone, food, or otherwise, and focus on the road. By paying complete attention to the act of driving, the threat of distraction is eliminated. Many States, including Florida and New York, are cracking down on cell phone usage while driving, giving a legal incentive to focus on the road.
