Applying for SSD Benefits as a Caregiver
The Social Security Disability (SSD) program provides additional income to those that are unable to work otherwise. Under most circumstances, it will be the individual that will receive benefits that applies for them, however sometimes it will be the caregiver instead that needs to apply. This may be because the disabled individual is not of a sound mind to fill out such an application or because the caregiver requires additional income in order to support the needs of the disabled individual. In these cases, the process for applying and receiving SSD benefits is slightly different.
Firstly, you will need to be aware of the different Social Security programs that are available. While the SSD program is usually the “go-to,” there are others, including SSI or SSDI, may also be applicable. It is recommended that you apply for any and all programs that you have to maximize the potential for income gain.
Secondly, it is important to gather any and all information about the disability of the one being cared for and the individual’s situation. Knowing if such a disease is on the list of easy approvals, as common ones such as Parkinson’s, ALS, and Cerebral Palsy are, will also simplify the application and speed up the process. More information is always recommended, when in doubt, as it will increase the chances of winning benefits.
If you are a caregiver and applying for SSD benefits as one, you may need to appeal to the Social Security Administration and attend a hearing in order to receive benefits. If you do, having an attorney on your side that is well-versed in SSD law will drastically increase your chances of victory.
