June is Cancer Survivors Month: What to Know About Disability Benefits
In the United States, almost 1.7 million people are newly diagnosed with cancer each year. Being diagnosed with cancer can leave you feeling helpless, alone and scared. However, there is a huge community of cancer survivors and patients to help ease some of those feelings. Every June is Cancer Survivors month. It is a month to celebrate those who have survived cancer and inspire those who have recently been diagnosed. It is a month for people who have been affected by cancer, whether personally or through a loved one, to come together and support each other. In the state of Florida, you can qualify for disability benefits because you have cancer.
Some types of cancer will automatically qualify for disability benefits, but you may have to apply for other types. It is important to remember a few things if you plan on applying for disability because of cancer. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will do an evaluation of your condition. They will check a few things like the origin of cancer, documentation, and treatment. According to the SSA, you will only qualify for disability if the cancer keeps you out of work for a long period of time. However, even with the proper qualifications, the SSA could still reject your claim leaving you to feel helpless. This should not stop you though. You may want to enlist the help of an attorney and file an appeal against the SSA’s decision.
The SSA also has a program called Compassion Allowances where certain forms of cancer will qualify. For example, cancer could qualify if it is aggressive, inoperable, and continues to reoccur despite treatment.
