Applying for your Child to Receive Disability Benefits
The Social Security program in America was created in order to help individuals and families with low income and those who are unable to work due to disabilities. Anyone can apply for benefits, though only those that meet the criteria set forth by the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be accepted and granted benefits. If you are a parent or guardian and would like to apply for benefits for your child, you have the ability to as well. The process for this is a little different than normal, however.
The first step in applying for your child to receive disability benefits is to review the guidelines and procedures that the SSA has created for such benefits. These can be found on the Administration’s website here. Low income is a requirement for benefits, as is proof of the disability from medical professionals. If you have any questions or concerns about the guidelines or would like additional resources, you can find them on the SSA’s website as well or could contact them via phone or e-mail.
Preparing the necessary documentation in advance is always recommended, but once you are ready you can begin filling out the online application. The form itself is a little bit lengthy, but it is fairly straight forward. Included among the application is also consent forms, signed on behalf of the child. Once completed, you have only to wait to hear back on the decision made by the SSA.
If your benefits are initially denied, you may appeal to have it overturned. When going through the appeal process, it is always a good idea to work with an attorney to help you make the best case possible and give you the best chance of winning.
