What to Do When a Lawyer Declines Your Case
One of the very first steps in pursuing a lawsuit is to find a good attorney that will fight for and with you to see that your case ends in victory. This is especially true for personal injury claims, as the factors in them can be complicated and varied. The person looking to file the claim might shop around for different lawyers, but there might be times where seemingly no lawyer, or perhaps the one a person favors in any given case, rejects and refuses to help with the case. What should you do if you find yourself in this kind of situation?
The first thing to figure out is why a certain lawyer or multiple lawyers declined the case. The vast majority of the time, the lawyer will provide a reason why he or she has turned down your case and it might be something as mundane as not having enough time or having a conflict of interest in the case. There’s nothing one can do about such reasons and you should continue to search for a different lawyer.
Sometimes a lawyer might reject a case because he or she feels that the case is unwinnable or not substantial enough to turn into a full lawsuit. While it is always a good idea to get a second opinion, if enough lawyers tell you that there isn’t much merit to a case, then it might be best to stop trying to go down that route.
Finally, there may be situations where the lawyer doesn’t “click” well with you and feels that it might not be worth it to take on the case if it’s going to be too much trouble. Lawyers are sometimes like counselors and you should try to find out that might understand your case better. If you face consistent rejection for reasons like this, then it might be a good idea to look at your case more carefully and see if you can gather more information that might support your case.
