The Most Common Types of Personal Injury Lawsuits
For most people, the term “personal injury” is vague and could encompass many different acts and situations. This is certainly true; personal injury law covers a variety of circumstances that all have one thing in common. In any personal injury lawsuit, it is the negligence or carelessness of another person that led to damages to another person and the injured person is seeking compensation for said injuries. As there are many situations in which this could occur, here are some of the most common types of personal injury lawsuits.
The most common type of personal injury lawsuit is that related to an automobile accident. There are many different injuries that occur in a car accident, including broken bones, whiplash, muscle strains, and head trauma. If someone else is at fault in a car accident, that injured person can file a lawsuit against the guilty driver. Note that this lawsuit is for bodily damages, not those done to the vehicle.
Another common personal injury lawsuit is for medical malpractice. This kind of lawsuit is filed when a doctor or other medical professional causes harm to a patient through negligent or intentionally malicious practices. Slip and fall cases are a result of someone being injured on another person’s property, usually a storefront, due to the oversight of the property owner. This is another kind of personal injury case, however the specifics do vary depending on the type of property and area.
Finally, a pet owner is responsible for any injuries that pet inflicts on another, making dog bites and other related injuries grounds for a personal injury lawsuit. Defamation is an uncommon, but still fairly used, kind of personal injury case in which someone is keeping restitution for damages to a person’s reputation caused by malicious intent.
If you or someone you know has sustained injuries in these or similar cases, there are certainly grounds for a personal injury lawsuit.
